I can't help but wonder if Craig & Tex aren't hoping we abandon the old forum altogether, so they can rest. But there are a lot of good threads there that should be saved.

Craig doesn't really seem to be involved anymore, so it's up to MT whos seems overbusy. He hasn't been on Boglehead for years, so never read my recent messages. Fact is, there's a few thorny variables involved in moving to a new host but the most primary is finding one that isn't doggy doo!!!

Is it the same as freeforums dot *org*?I've used, not run but used, a forum there, and with no hiccups whatsoever.

I'm going to talk to Tex about moving forum providers. Arvixe sucks and it needs to be moved to something more reliable. Since they moved our server it has gotten much worse. I'll update when I am able.

Are you sharing a server with Hillary Clinton perchance? I can confirm that this is the real Reub and not an imposter.

I have contacted Tex and I will recommend we move to a dedicated forum host. It will then be a matter of seeing if here or somewhere else can import the old messages (I have backups).

It's not a problem: wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Hosting_-_How_do_I_move_my_SMF_forum_to_a_different_hostSome hosts will even migrate for you for free, but that does assume expertise that may be unwarranted from the horror stories I've read. Do we have a new host in mind? We really should avoid any company on that list that I posted on the forum. I do know one disgusted Arvixe customer did due diligence and settled on a provider that wasn't on the list or owned by EIG. Better yet, the prices were still inexpensive.

Well this forum host does not import any old forum data. So they are out unless people wanted to start brand-new again. I'm open to suggestions. I didn't read the old thread so post providers here. Ideally:
1) Will do all maintenance/updates of forum without any manual work. 2) Reliable. 3) Relatively cheap.

But that's a great idea, actually! The only host I'm prepared to recommend at this point is the one the former Arvixe customer decided upon: www.ethernetservers.com/They use only the best of breed hardware and offer a choice of servers in LA or Miami, as well as domain registration privacy for $2.50 extra. They will migrate for free if you're using cpanel on the old host: www.ethernetservers.com/clients/knowledgebase/116/Will-you-migrateormove-my-data-from-my-old-host.html

Thanks, Craig!
Just my two cents, but importing old forum data would be priceless.

It would be terrible to lose the old data. What has happened with the other host over the past month or so to make the forums site so unreliable? It wasn't always this bad.
And who's that guy deuxlsteau? That name sounds vaguely familiar.
