www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2016/05/26/the-superbug-that-doctors-have-been-dreading-just-reached-the-u-s/"For the first time, researchers have found a person in the United States carrying bacteria resistant to antibiotics of last resort, an alarming development that the top U.S. public health official says could signal "the end of the road" for antibiotics. The antibiotic-resistant strain was found last month in the urine of a 49-year-old Pennsylvania woman. Defense Department researchers determined that she carried a strain of E. coli resistant to the antibiotic colistin, according to a study published Thursday in Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, a publication of the American Society for Microbiology. The authors wrote that the discovery "heralds the emergence of a truly pan-drug resistant bacteria." How can we, as individuals, protect ourselves from this threat? More Purell?

Stay the fuck away from hospitals! That is good advice regardless [stay healthy, so there is no need]. But what other option is there, besides hospitals, if you are seriously sick or injured?

Pugchief, how safe are dentist offices? Be honest. Just don't let them examine you, touch you, or drill on you, and you will be safe. [/sarcasm]

So do you think maybe now the practice of feeding antibiotics to meat & dairy animals will finally be banned? After all, that's ~80% of antibiotic use in the U.S.
Naah. That would require Congress to do something constructive.

Stay the fuck away from hospitals! That is good advice regardless [stay healthy, so there is no need]. But what other option is there, besides hospitals, if you are seriously sick or injured? I think in that case its the lesser of two evils when you got a gaping gunshut wound or you got parts of your body crushed in a traffic facility. But for less serious stuff, you don't need to be going to hospitals or the ER for anything, ever. People that do so are "low information voters" as Bernie Bots like to say. There's a lot of practical alternatives now like urgent care centers, remote doctors, nurse hotlines, clinics, etc.. I expect it will only get better as the lack of supply vs demand under Obamacare gets worse. One thing you can always count on with the free market is provider specialization between "high information" and "low information". It's too bad Theranos turned out to be a scam. It would have been a nice little revolution.

Not incidentally, "don't get sick" is also my health insurance strategy.
